Wilkes-Barre Twp. Police Department
Critical Incident Tactical Team
TACT
In 1991, the need was recognized for the creation of a team of officers from within the
Department, to properly handle the service of High Risk Warrants, and contain Critical
Incidents occurring within the Township. Such a team was created and the Wilkes-Barre Twp.
Police Department's Special Entry Team was born.
The unit began as a four member team and received special training in tactics and
weapons from various agencies and facilities throughout the east coast. The members
volunteered many hours of training time without compensation to establish such a valuable
program to the community. The team acquired equipment through the Federal Surplus Program,
offered to municipal agencies fighting the drug war.
Over the years, the Team has increased their capabilities to
effectively, professionally, safely and responsibly handle the service of High Risk
Warrants and respond to Critical Incidents occurring within Wilkes-Barre Township. The team
membership is composed of officers from
the Department. Additional specialized equipment was acquired and the addition of
a Crisis
Negotiations Team (CNT) was added to the program.
The 2007 team is composed of tactical officers, crisis negotiators,
and numerous staff support personnel. The team
members participate in regular in-service training sessions as well as attending
specialized training curriculum and undergo physical and skills testing
throughout the year.
The Wilkes-Barre Twp. Police Department TACT is a proud member of the NTOA, the National Tactical Officer's Association,
holding duel memberships for both the Tactical Team and Crisis Negotiations Team.
